After leaving Zeyniler, Munise and I became inseparable
travelers. We moved from one town to another across the vast
landscapes of Anatolia. My reputation as a dedicated teacher
began to spread rapidly. People didn't just talk about my
teaching methods; they spoke of my appearance and my spirit.
In a small, traditional town, the local people gave me a new
nickname: "Gülbeşeker." It was the name of a traditional
Turkish sweet made of rose petals and sugar. To them, I was as
sweet and elegant as a rose, but I also had the strength of the
Anatolian soil. Wherever I went, children followed me, and
families opened their doors to the "young, beautiful teacher
from Istanbul."
However, being "Gülbeşeker" was not always easy. My beauty
often caused problems. Some people were jealous, and others
misunderstood my independence. In that era, it was unusual for
a young woman to travel alone with a child, working as a
professional. I had to be twice as careful and three times as
brave as any man.
